22.05.2005 - CESP

February 22, 2005 at the European Parliament in Strasbourg

The European Council of Police Unions took part in an extraordinary meeting of European parliamentarians, members of the workgroup "LIBE", on the topic of the biometrics. The Secretary-General, Gérard GRENERON, the President of the Commission for European Affairs of the CESP, Klaus JANSEN, the Ispettore Capo Calogero BIONDI (Italian scientific Police - Fingerprinting) and the Deputy General Secretary Giorgio de BIASI attended this meeting.

The meeting took place in the presence of about fifteen parliamentarians of the PSE on the initiative of their coordinator Mrs. Martine ROURE within the framework of the works that they currently undertake.

This intervention aimed at informing the parliamentarians on the technical implications of the insertion of biometric data in the identity papers, their use for the authentification/check of the documents and the identification of the persons in the perspective of the creation of centralised data systems as the VIS (information system on the visas).
It was also the possibility for the CESP to specify the opinion of the services of police forces who should use these new documents.
